I am looking recommendations for a CAD program. Ideally a free one, since it’s just for hobby usage and learning. I read about FreeCAD, any thoughts about that?

Hi @Thorsten, Onshape is free for public projects.
SimScale has a connector app for Onshape so you can import your Onshape models directly into SimScale for simulation.

as @BenLewis pointed out, Onshape might definitely worth checking out if it suits your needs. As SimScale, it runs completely in your web browser and offers a very rich feature set.
If you prefer FreeCAD, that’ll also work - it exports STEP/IGES/BREP that you then can upload to SimScale an simulate. Also a great tool + community!

you can simply import any step file. FreeCAD is an open source cad program.
